Virtualization and Storage Engineer

Quantico, VA
The Virtualization and Storage Engineer reports to the MSTP Program Manager and receives work direction derivatives from the Communications and Information Systems Section Lead.

  • Responsible for maintaining, monitoring and managing the existing virtual infrastructure, as well as migration and upgrade of the virtual infrastructure through lifecycle management. This responsibility includes, but is not limited to;
    • Identifying, researching, and resolving technical problems
    • Responding to telephone calls, e-mail and personnel requests for technical support
    • Documenting, tracking and monitoring the problem to ensure a timely resolution.
  • Accountable for all level 1, 2 and 3 engineering/support and solution installations in the data center and in deployed facilities and tactical network locations. The role spans the data center as well as disaster recovery in relation to virtualization.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact who is responsible for the overall health, performance, and capacity of our internal service.
    • Assist in the roll-out and deployment of new product features and installations to facilitate rapid iteration and growth.
    • Develop tools to improve our ability to rapidly deploy and effectively monitor custom applications in a large-scale environment.
    • Drive standardization efforts across multiple services Identify and lead efforts to improve automation
    • Participate in an on-call rotation Function well in a fast-paced, rapidly-changing environment.
  • Configure Dell PowerEdge M Series, Dell PowerEdge VRTX Servers, Dell EMC, Cisco UCS, Cisco Business Edition, Cisco CMS. Cisco Collaboration Virtualization, Fabric Interconnect and Extenders.
  • Configure VMware vCenter Server, vSphere Standard, vSphere Enterprise Plus, vSphere Platinum, Unity-Sync, VMWare ESX/ESXi 6.5, 6.7, and 7.0, vSAN, Site Recovery Manager, VMware Site Recovery, Virtual Volumes,
  • Install and configure ESXi 6.7 servers
  • Display competence in vCenter 6.5 and 6.7 Server configuring licensing, network, and Virtual Machine Cluster
  • Display competence in Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Availability Orchestrator, Veeam ONE, Veeam Management Pack (MP), Veeam Agents,
  • Ensure compliance with DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and remedy deficiencies.
  • Display expertise in virtualization technologies: para-virtualization, hypervisors, etc.
  • Comfortable with rapid development cycles, tight schedules, and overlapping projects
  • Must understand components of VCF this includes: SDDC manager, vSphere, vSAN, NSX for vSphere.
  • Design, evaluate, install, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot classified and unclassified server infrastructure environments (i.e., physical blade server hardware, chassis, storage arrays, rack mounted equipment, etc.), Windows Servers, Linux Red Hat Servers environments, and other equipment to support day‐to‐day operations, exercises, and events.
  • Plan, design, integrate and administer best practice disaster recovery techniques to support the continuity of operations of Marine Air Ground Task Force Staff Training Program (MSTP) server resources.
  • Conduct day‐to‐day administration, maintenance, and monitoring of the virtual environment.
  • Design, maintain and troubleshoot enterprise storage area network systems to support day‐to‐day operations and exercises/training events/wargames, and exercises/training events/wargames in which MSTP participates.
  • Perform day‐to‐day monitoring and administration for physical and virtual server operating systems, file structures, directory services, software distributions, client management, security postures, and updates.
  • Design, Data Migration, Configuration and Management of VMWare.
  • Implements backup and recovery. 
  • VMware Certified Professional – VCP
  • DoD 8570.1-M IAT Level II or higher required – Current DoD approved IA baseline certification (CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, Security+ CE, SSCP); a minimum of one valid Computing Environment (CE)/Operating System (OS) Certificate (i.e. MS Windows Server 2012 R2 Cert, MS Windows 10 cert, a VMware 6.0 Cert); and at least 3 years in IA technology or a related area.
  • At least five years of experience in IT, which should include successful experience as an enterprise team member or lead.
  • Preferred level of certifications and experience include:
    • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert – MCSE: Core Infrastructure
    • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate – MCSA: Windows Server 2016
    • Certification and expert knowledge experience support Windows and Linux virtualization in VMware technologies
    • ESXi on VMware vSphere v7.0/v6.7/v6.5/, vCenter
    • MS PowerShell automation
  • Advanced knowledge of best practices in corporate information security policies, legal and regulatory obligations such as ITIL, ITLM and equivalent standards
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills with the ability to analyze data from various sources to determine next steps
  • Direct participation in real world operations is desired.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Systems: Windows Server 2016, Windows 10 Client enterprise environments, Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), SQL Server; VMware.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project, and SharePoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with others and senior management.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. Able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.  Able to design and write clear communications and present training programs.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent organizational, planning and prioritization skills
  • Ability to instinctively adapt, plan, inform and influence
  • Must meet DoD 8570.1‐M Information Assurance workforce program requirements for Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II or higher.
  • Must possess and maintain training and certifications sufficient to be granted privileged access to Marine Corps information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) through documented completion of required training and certification.
  • Required to sit for extended periods of time and maintain focus
  • Daily travel in local area during work day (including use of personal vehicle)
  • Be able to work an unstable schedule, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Requires 10% - 20% travel – both CONUS and OCONUS – single trips be up to five weeks in duration
  • Qualification as an authorized company driver is required. All authorized company drivers must have a valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and a driving record that is acceptable to the company’s auto insurance provider.
  • Daily travel in local area during work day (including use of personal vehicle).
  • A Secret security clearance is required for this position.
  • This position also requires a completed Personnel Security Investigation that will qualify the incumbent to be eligible for access to at least the TS-SCI level, and the individual must be read-in for NATO level access.
